If there is one thing that Los Angeles is known for (other than swimming pools, and movie stars), it’s the traffic. The 5 North is always brutal, and don’t even get me started on the 405 in either direction. Throw in a little construction here and there, and you are guaranteed a good hour and a half or more, at a snail’s pace, to your destination.

I’ve been driving back and forth, and around LA over the past few days, some of the time during peak traffic hours; and, I’ve found that the key to making traffic bearable is distraction. Not in a way that would take your eyes off the road (believe me, you want your eyes on the road), but in a way that takes your mind off the fact that you are probably going to be late to wherever you are headed, or that the nearest restroom which is only one exit away, will still take you about twenty minutes to reach. Music always makes the drive a little more pleasant, also podcasts or lectures on something of interest to me, can make a big difference. It’s also my favorite time to catch up with everyone I’ve been meaning to call (using my hands-free headset, of course).

And if all else fails, and no amount of listening to anything will make traffic bearable, there’s always the option of leaving reeeaally early, for streets that look more like this:
